A Morning Devotion

As light peeks over the horizon, so begins a day filled with opportunities – to be at peace amidst the pressures and demands of work, writing, community and family. How I want to corral it all, put it behind a fence where it cannot run amuck, where other people cannot mess with it, change it and make it bigger and more cumbersome and demanding than it already is.

Hah! I can pretty well guess, Lord, that you aren’t going to support me in that quest.

A kindly clergyman who left this earth long ago used to tell me that You are in the chaos. Indeed, that is where I find you but not often as joy and adventure shared between us, laughing in the face of angst and playfully throwing myself into the fray. No, when I find you in the chaos, it is because I seek you as Savior again and again.

How much better to walk into the unstable and unknown with You in anticipation of the wind and the rain, to approach it with an edge of shared excitement, whatever comes, and leaving the details of navigating it to You. How much better to walk the path You light for me, eager to see the road ahead and discover how the story plays out.

Well, Lord, give me strength and courage because all of that scares me to death. You are my only hope for the day, my only hope for the beautiful life ahead.
